The history of English is conventionally,if perhaps too neatly, divided into three periods usually called Old English (or Anglo-Saxon),Middle English and Modern English. The earliest period begins with the migration of certain Germanic tribes from the continent to Britain in the fifth century A.D.,though no records of their language survived from before the seventh century, and it continued until the end of the eleventh century or a bit later.By that time Latin,Old Norse (the language of the Viking invaders),and especially the Anglo-Norman French of the dominant class after the Norman Conquest in 1,066 had begun to have an important impact on the lexicon, and the well-developed inflectional system that typifies the grammar of Old English had begun to break down.
The period of Middle English extends roughly from the twelfth century to the fifteenth. The influence of French (and Latin, often by way of French) upon the lexicon continued throughout this period, the loss of some inflections and the reduction of others (often to a final unstressed vowel spelled e) accelerated (加速),and many changes took place within the phonological and grammatical systems of the language.A typical prose passage, especially one from the later part of the period, will not have such a foreign look to us as Aelfric’s prose has.
All the same, the number of inflections for nouns, adjectives and verbs has been greatly reduced, and in most respects Mandeville is closer to Modern than to Old English.
56.When did the Anglo-Norman French begin to impact Old English?
A.In 1,066.
B.In the seventh century.
C.In the fifth century.
D.In the twelfth century.
57.How long did the period of Middle English last?
A.About three centuries.
B.About four centuries.

58.What does the underlined word “impact” mean according to the passage?
A.Influence. B.Advantage.
C.Shortcoming. D.Loss.
59.For which the number of inflections has been greatly reduced?Which is not included?
A.Nouns B.Adjectives
C.Verbs D.Grammar

How many times have you gotten upset because someone wasn’t doing his or her job, because your child isn’t behaving, because your partner or friend isn’t living up to his or her end of the bargain?
__71__It’s part of the human experience.
One thing that irritates me is when people talk during a movie.Or cut me off in traffic,or don’t wash their dishes after eating.Actually,I have a lot of these little annoyances—don’t we all?__72__
Let me let you in on a little secret to finding peace of mind:see the glass as already broken.
Expect things to go wrong, expect things to be different than we hoped or planned, expect the unexpected to happen.__73__
One quick example:on our recent trip to Japan,I told my kids to expect things to go wrong.I told them,“See it as part of the adventure.”__74__When we took the wrong train on a foreign-language subway system,or when it rained on the day we went to the Disney Sea,or when we took three trains and walked 10 blocks only to find the National Children’s Castle closed on Mondays...they said,“It’s part of the adventure!”And we didn’t get too bothered.
So if you expect it to happen—even see it as already happening, before it happens—you won’t get so upset.__75__And that,my friends,is a welcome surprise.
A.Expect things to go according to your plan.
B.This kind of anger happens to all of us.
C.And accept it.
D.Try your best not to lose control.
E.And it isn’t always easy to find peace when you’ve become upset.
