A group’s IQ (智商), we might think, would be simply the average intelligence (平均智力) of the group’s members, or perhaps the intelligence of the group’s smartest member. ___1___ A group’s intelligence es outfrommunications that go on within group. The members who just control the discussion or who stay away and don’t say much make the intelligence of the group lower. All members can have a coffee break at the same time, leading them to do their work more professionally and feel more pleased with their jobs. A But some scientists have found that this isn’t so. They were not allowed to "hang out" with other kids after school. They had to be the top students in their classes. And they had to practice the piano and violin for hours every day. ______ She admits this caused a lot of tears and anger but she has few regrets (后悔). Chua says, like her, most Asian mothers are tigers because they believe their children can achieve a lot if theyre pushed hard enough. ______ They care more about their childrens self-esteem (自尊). They dont want to push their kids too hard for fear of hurting their feelings. American mothers encourage their children to find their own path. So, is a tiger mom better than a pussycat? Perhaps it depends on the differences between Asian and Western cultures. _______ Some kids need to be pushed while others respond to a gentler hand. To growl or to purr? There is no easy answer. A. Most of us find it hard to say no to something attractive, however, scientists now say that willpower is very important to success and a happy life. Scientists in different countries have been studying the effects of willpower on peoples lives for a long time. The results are similar, according to an article on February 7 in the Guardian, a famous British newspaper. In one experiment, scientists told young children that they could either have a marshmallow(圓形軟糖) now, or two marshmallows in 15 minutes.____2____ Scientists then continued studying the children as they grew up. They wanted to see if some children always had stronger willpower. They also wanted to see how having stronger willpower affected their lives. _____3_____Oppositely, the children who had shown weaker willpower at that young age were more likely to be in low-paid jobs, to be overweight, to have social problems. But there is hope, Roy F Baumeister, an American social psychology(心理學(xué)) professor(教授) told the Guardian. Baumeister says we can train our willpower just like we train our muscles.-____4_____ You could start by making yourself stand up straight, speaking in plete sentences, or using a puter mouse with the other hand. Scientists have found that people who manage to change little habits often perform much better in laboratory willpower tests. ____5______Dont try to do too many things at the same time, or when you dont have enough energy, for example when you are ill. If you already feel tired, you can try to recharge(恢復(fù)) your willpower with a good nights sleep and by eating well. A You should have a goal every day. B Waiting obviously needed more willpower. C Even a little practice can strengthen our overall self-control if we do it regularly. D It showed that willpower is the most important to success and a happy life. EYears later, scientists found that the children who had waited for two marshmallows were all healthier, happier and richer adults. FLike muscles, willpower can get tired. (6) Making a good job choice is almost as good as choosing a good life. ___ For my job, there are three important things that I will consider: The first one - that I must work in an area I like - is most important to me. Someone once said if you find a job that you enjoy, then you wont have to work another day.________ I would like to be the most valuable member there. All this is possible only if I like what I do. The second one is that the area of my work must lead me to solve some new and hard problems._______ In order for this to happen, the work must provide enough problems. More than just working to live, I enjoy making a difference and trying my best for the whole progress. I would also like to be well remunerated for my hard work, so I can lead a fortable life with this hard-won money. Then I can provide the best for my family. The third important thing is that I would like to work in an area that would help other people. The work in my mind is in fields such as the army, training or management. In such areas, I can help to develop the abilities of others and bring out their best. ________ When I bee old, I would like to look back with a great sense of satisfaction that thousands of people have bee better persons through my work. I accept the idea that no one should make a choice of a job suddenly or quickly. _________Then, he should decide how he works towards it. He should study the proper courses, read the books and speak to knowledgeable persons in that field before making a job choice. A good choice will most probably lead to a better life. I offered you cool and fortable place to rest. ______5______I saved your life from the hot sun, but you humiliate me!’ The traveler realized his mistake and apologized to the tree.
