He had little school education. In spite of this, he became the most famous writer of his time. He made millions of dollars by writing. His real name was Samuel Langhorne Clemens, but he is better known all over the world as Mark Twain, his pen name. Mark Twain was born in 1835 and he was not a healthy baby. In fact, he was not expected to live through the first winter. But with his mothers tender care, he managed to survive. As a boy, he caused much trouble for his parents. He used to play jokes on all of his friends and neighbours. He didnt like to go to school, and he constantly ran away from home. He always went in the direction of the nearby Mississippi. He was nearly drowned nine times. After his fathers death in 1847, Mark Twain began to work for a printer, who only provided him with food and clothing. Then, he worked as a printer, a riverboat pilot and later joined the army. But shortly after that he became a miner. During this period, he started to write short stories. Afterwards he became a fulltime writer. In 1870, Mark Twain got married. In the years that followed he wrote many books including Tom Sawyer in 1876, and Huckleberry Finn in 1884, which made him famous, and brought him a great fortune. Unfortunately, Mark Twain got into debts in bad investments (投資) and he had to write large numbers of stories to pay these debts. In 1904, his wife died, and then three of their children passed away. She began writing early in life, although the prejudices (偏見) of her times forced her to have her books published anonymously (匿名). But Jane Austen is perhaps the best known and best loved of Baths many famous local people and visitors. She paid two long visits here during the last five years of the eighteenth century and from 1801 to 1806, Bath was her home. Her deep knowledge of the city is fully seen in two of her novels, Northanger Abbey and Persuasion, which are largely set in Bath. The city is still very much as Jane Austen knew it, keeping in its streets and public buildings the wellordered world that she described so well in her novels. Now the pleasure of learning Jane Austens Bath can be enhanced (增強) by visiting the Jane Austen Centre in Gay Street. Here, in a Georgian town house in the heart of the city, you can find out more about Bath in Jane Austens time and the importance of Bath in her life and work. The Centre has been set up with the help and guidance of members of the Jane Austen Society. After your visit to the Centre, you can look round the attractive shop, which offers a huge collection of Jane Austen related books, cards and many specially designed gifts. Jane Austen quizzes are offered to keep the children busy. You can also have walking tours of Jane Austens Bath, which is a great way to find out more about Jane Austen and discover the wonderful Georgian city of Bath. The tour lasts about one and a half hours. The experienced guides will take you to the places where Jane lived, walked and shopped. 6.Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage? D.The city was built according to what was described in Austens novels. 答案:B 細節(jié)判斷題。從第二段第二句可知,奧斯汀在巴斯居住的時間是1801~1806年,應排除A項:根據(jù)第二段第三句“Her deep knowledge of the city...” 7.Jane Austen paid two long visits to Bath ________. A.in her early twenties B.in her early teens C.in her late twenties D.in her late teens 答案:A 細節(jié)推斷題。簡奧斯汀出生于1775年,第二段第二句話告訴讀者她在18世紀的最后5年(1795~1799)兩次參觀巴斯,可推算是在她20多歲的初期。 8.What can we learn about Bath from the passage? A.Bath has greatly changed since Jane Austens death. B.The city has changed as much as Jane Austen knew it. C.Bath remains almost the same as in Jane Austens time. A.a(chǎn)ttract readers to visit the city of Bath B.a(chǎn)sk readers to buy Austens books C.tell readers about Jane Austens experience D.give a brief introduction to the Austen Society 答案:A 作者意圖題。 10.It takes you about one and a half hours ________.
