While traveling in Tokyo recently with a Japanese colleague,I gave a short talk to a group of 20 managers. At the end,I asked whether there were any questions or comments. No hands went up,so I went to sit down.My colleague whispered to me,“I think there actually were some comments,Erin.Do you mind if I try?” I agreed, but I guessed it a waste of breath. He asked the group again,“Any comments or questions?” Still,no one raised a hand, but this time he looked very carefully at each person in the silent audience.Gesturing to one of them,he said,“Do you have something to add?” To my amazement, she responded “Yes,thank you.” and asked me a very interesting question. My colleague repeated this several times, looking directly at the audience and asking for more questions or comments. After the session,I asked my colleague,“How did you know that those people had questions?” He hesitated, not sure how to explain it,and then said,“It has to do with how bright their eyes are.” He continued,“In Japan,we don’t make as much direct eye contact as you do in the West.So when you asked if there were any comments, most people were not looking directly at you.But a few people in the group were looking right at you,and their eyes were bright. That indicates that they would be happy to have you call on them.” I thought to myself I would ever have learned from my upbringing in Minnesota.Since then,I try to focus on understanding behavior in other cultures I encounter, and keep finding the bright eyes in the room. 【語篇解讀】 本文是一篇記敘文。作者自身是一個有多種文化背景的人,但是在日本的講學使他懂得了眼神交流的重要性。 5.What can we conclude from the first paragraph? I remember receiving my favorite bear for Christmas one year when I was just a little kid. This event always stuck in my mind over the years and I believe that part of this memory is because of a question that I asked of my parents. You see,our family was quite large and there always wasn’t a lot of money to buy a lot for each child at Christmas. But,we also never went without anything. So,on this particular Christmas morning,I was lucky enough to get a bear—one that I had spied sometime ago and told my parents how much I liked it.And,that bear was just what I got. After all my siblings had finished opening their gifts,I noticed that my parents didn’t have any gifts to open at all. So,I turned to my mother, and asked,“Mom,where are your and Dad’s gifts?”She looked at me for a moment and then simply said,“We would rather you kids have gifts,we don’t need anything except all of you right here with us.” Obviously,as a child,I did not really understand her answer but as the years past and especially as a parent,I know exactly what she meant. Throughout life, there are many memories that cross back into our consciousness. The memory of that bear, however, always guides my thinking about giving to others and not expecting or wanting anything in return. 【語篇解讀】 童年的記憶尤為溫馨。作者的圣誕節(jié)禮物讓他對生活有不同的感悟——付出但不求回報。 8.The first paragraph serves as a(n) ________.
