For this and other reasons I was somewhat lonely. I had the lonely child’s habit of making up stories and holding conversations with imaginary persons, and I think from the very start my literary ambitions were mixed up with the feeling of being isolated(孤獨的) and undervalued(低估). I knew that I had a natural ability with words and a power of facing unpleasant facts, and I felt that this created a sort of private world in which I could get my own back for my failure in everyday life. However, the quantity of serious writing which I produced all through my childhood would not add up to half a dozen pages. I wrote my first poem at the age of four or five, my mother taking it down to dictation. I cannot remember anything about it except that it was about a tiger and the tiger had “chair-like teeth”- a good enough expression. At eleven, when the war of 1914-18 broke out, I wrote a poem which was printed in the local newspaper, as was another, two years later, on the death of Kitchener. From time to time, when I was a bit older, I wrote bad and usually unfinished “nature poems”. I also, about twice, attempted a short story which was a failure. That was the total of the would-be serious work that I actually set down on paper during all those years. 56. The underlined word “it” in paragraph 2 refers to___________. A. the quantity of serious writing B. the writer’s first poem C. the writer’s childhood D. the tiger in the poem 57. From the text, we learn that as a little boy the writer_________. A. had no playmates B. showed his gift for writing C. put out lots of poems and stories D. got his first poem published in 1916 58. What can be inferred about the writer? A. He was least favored in his family. B. B. He had much difficulty in talking with others. C. He had an unhappy childhood for lack of care. D. His loneliness resulted in his interest in writing. To extinguish (熄滅) different kinds of fires, several types of fire extinguishers have been invented. They must be ready for immediate use when fire breaks out. Most portable (手提式的) kinds operate for less than a minute, so they are useful only on small fires. The law requires ships, trains, buses and planes to carry extinguishers. Since fuel, oxygen and heat must be present in order for fire to exist, one or more of these things must be removed or reduced to extinguish a fire. If the heat is reduced by cooling the material below a certain temperature, the fire goes out. The cooling method is the most mon way to put out a fire. Water is the best cooling material because it is low in cost and easy to get. Another method of extinguishing fire is by cutting off the oxygen. This is usually done by covering the fire with sand, steam or some other things. A blanket may be used to cover a small fire. A third method is called separation, which includes removing the fuel, or material easy to burn, from a fire, so that it can find no fuel. The method that is used to put out a fire depends upon the type of fire. Fires have been grouped in three classes. Fires in wood, paper, cloth and the like are called Class A fires. These materials usually help keep the fire on. Such fires can be stopped most readily by cooling with water. 59. If a fire breaks out on a bus, which of the follow should be ready there for you to use? A. Sand B. Water C. A blanket. D. An extinguisher. 60. To cover a small piece of burning wood with a basin in order to stop the fire is an example of ________. A. separating the fire B. reducing the heat C. removing the fuel D. cutting off the oxygen 61. In choosing how to put out a fire, we should first be clear about___________ . A. when it breaks out B. how it es about C. what kind it is D. where it takes place 62. What would the author probably discuss in the paragraph that follows? A. Another class of fires B. Another type of extinguishers C. How fires break out. D. How fires can be prevented. C Among rich countries, people in the United States work the longest hours. They work much longer than in Europe. This difference is quite surprising because productivity(生產(chǎn)力) per hour worked is the same in the United States as it is in France, Spain and Germany, and it is growing at a similar speed. In most countries and at most times in history, as people have bee richer they have chosen to work less. In other words they have decided to “spend” a part of their extra ine on a fuller personal life. Over the last fifty years Europeans have continued this pattern, and hours of work have fallen sharply, but not in the United States. We do not fully know why this is. One reason may be more satisfying work, or less satisfying personal lives. Longer hours do of course increase the GDP (國內(nèi)生產(chǎn)總值). So the United States has produced more per worker than, say, France. The United States also has more of its people at work, while in France many more mothers and older workers have decided to stay at home. The overall result is that American GDP per head is 40% higher than in France, even though productivity per hour worked is the same. It is not clear which of the two situations is better. As we have seen, work has to be pared with other values like family life, which often get lost in interest. It is too early to explain the different trends in happiness over time in different countries. But it is a disappointing idea that in the United States happiness has made no progress since 1975, while it has risen in Europe. Could this have anything to do with trends in the work-life balance? 63. From the text we know that the author________ . A. believes that longer working hours is better B. prefers shorter working hours to longer ones C. says nothing certain about which pattern is better D. thinks neither of the patterns is good 64. Which of the following countries has more of its people at work? A. Spain. B. France. C. Germany. D. America. 65. What message can we get from the text? A. The GDP of Europe is higher than that of America. B. Two possible reasons are given for working longer hours in the US. C. People all over the world choose to work less when they are richer. D. Americans are happier than Europeans. 66. Which of the following would be the best title for the text? A. Americans and Europeans B. Staying at Home C. Work and Productivity D. Work and Happiness D The government of Norway is planning to build an unusual storage center on an island in the Arctic Ocean. The place would be large enough to hold about two million seeds. The goal is to present all crops known to scientists. The British magazine New Scientist published details of the plan last month. The structure will be designed to protect the world’s food supply against nuclear war, climate change and other possible threats. It will be built in a mountain on the Norwegian island of Spitsbergen. The mountain is less than one thousand kilometers from the North Pole, the northernmost position on earth. An international group called the Global Crop Diversity Trust is working on the project. The director of the group, Cary Fowler, spoke to New Scientist. He said the project would let the world rebuild agriculture if, in his word, “the worst came to the worst”. Norway is expected to start work next year. The project is expected to cost three million dollars. Workers will drill(鉆孔) deep in the side of a sandstone mountain. Temperatures in the area never rise above 0C. The seeds will be protected behind walls a meter thick and high-security door. The magazine report says the collection will represent the products of ten thousand years of farming. Most of the seeds at first will e from collections at seed banks in Africa, Asia and Latin America. To last a long time, seeds need to be kept in very low temperatures. Workers will not be present all the time. But they plan to replace the air inside the storage space each winter. Winter temperatures on the island are about eighteen degrees below 0C. The cold weather would protect the seeds even if the air could not be replaced. Mr. Fowler says the proposed structure will be the world’s safest gene bank. He says the plant seeds would only be used when all other seeds are gone for some reason. Norway first put forward the idea in the 1980s. But safety concerns delayed the plan. At that time, the Soviet Union was meeting in Rome of the Food and Agriculture Organization. 67.The project is meant to ______. A.increase the world’s food output in the future B.carry out some scientific experiments on plant genes C.build an exhibition centre of the world’s plant seeds D.protect crop seeds from dying out in case of possible disasters 68.Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the above passage? A.The government of Norway will perform the project alone. B.Seeds to be collected there were produced ten thousand years ago. C.Spitsbergen is chosen because it is free of the nuclear war forever. D.Temperature is a major consideration when choosing the storage place. 69.We can infer from the text that _______. A.Norway had meant to build the storage centre about 20 years before. B.The storage center will greatly promote world agriculture C.People will get newly-developed seeds from the center every year. D.There haven’t been any seed storage centers in the world before. 70.What is probably the best title of the passage? A.The Best Place to Store Seeds B.Noah’s Ark(諾亞方舟)of Plant Seeds in Plan C.Concerns of World Food Supply D.A New Way to Feed the World 第二節(jié) (共5小題;每小題2分,滿分10分) 根據(jù)短文內(nèi)容,從短文后的選項中選出能填入空白處的最佳答案。選項中有兩項為多余選項。(注意:E涂AB;F涂AC;G涂AD) E _ _71___ .Being angry doesn’t really solve much, but what people do when they feel angry is important.
