At the end of the original Grimm tale,Snow White’s stepmother is made to put on redhot iron shoes and dance until she falls down dead. This came as something of a shock. I always thought fairy tales had happy endings. And I didn’t want my fiveyearold daughter going to sleep thinking:“Thank goodness they tortured(折磨) that old woman to death.”That’s when I decided to write fairy tales. In the years that followed, I wrote tales nonstop and read them to Sally at bedtime. The Corn Dolly was based on a child who was always complaining; The Silly King was just a silly story Sally loved; I wrote The Witch and the Rainbow Cat for Sally because of her enormous appetite for stories about witches while Dr Bonocolus’s Devil is a new version of the Faust legend. Nicobobinus, however, was different. I wrote this book when Sally was older and engaged with all things girls have to do—who’s friends with who, who stuck a sticker on the back of whose boyfriend, or whatever thing she felt funny. Nicobobinus, the boy who could do anything, came out of my desire for a more innocent world. He lived a long time ago, in a city called Venice. Only his best friend, Rosie, knew he could, and nobody took any notice of anything Rosie said, because she was always having wild ideas anyway. Nicobobinus was so different that it turned out to be an instant hit. The Times called me“an author setting out to rival the classic fairy tales”. I asked Sally what she thought of Nicobobinus. She said it was her favourite. 【文章大意】 本文是一篇傳記類文章。作者主要介紹了自己開始撰寫童話故事的初衷并根據女兒的興趣撰寫的童話引起了巨大的反響。 1.What led the writer to start writing fairy tales for her daughter? For children, school is their first opportunity for social development and introduction to people outside of their family unit lessons learned in school go beyond mathematics and language arts. Students learn to develop individual interests and find other people who share their interests. Music is one of the ways likeminded children come together. When many people talk about the benefits of music education, they’re quick to point out all of the numerous and measurable results of music education: many studies show the positive impact music programs can have on children in other areas of study. Dr. Laurel Trainor, a professor of psychology, at McMaster University, has said young children who take music lessons show different brain development and improved memory compared to children who do not receive musical training. Stanford University researchers have found that musical training improves how the brain processes the spoken word, a finding that researchers say could lead to improving the reading ability of children who have dyslexia and other reading problems. Furthermore, in an analysis of data on more than 25,000 secondary school students, researchers at the United States Department of Education found that students who report consistent involvement in instrumental music during middle school and high school perform significantly better in mathematics. There are many reasons why music education can help to make a child a better student, but there also being involved in music is also a social endeavor that can set the course for lifelong friends and help create social groups that last through school and beyond. Music education breeds familiarity during a school career, when going from class to class or from school to school every year can be nervewracking and unfamiliar. 【文章大意】 這是一篇應用文。文章主要講述了音樂教育幫助孩子更好地發(fā)展,開發(fā)孩子的智力,增強記憶力,因此音樂教育更有利于孩子的成長。 5.What is the function of the first paragraph?
